EHL Camp 2011

Here is the most anticipated post-event pictures from VAD 57, which is the pictures taken during our very first EHL Camp 2011 which was held in the Miri MRC Headquarters a few weeks ago!

Hello hello dear members of VAD 57!

Soon, our VAD 57 will be joining the Exploring Humanitarian Law (EHL) Camp organized by the The Malaysian Red Crescent (MRC) Sarawak Branch jointly with MRC Miri Chapter!

And here's the fun part: 30 members of our VAD 57 are given the opportunity to join this once in a lifetime experience!!

The details of the camp are:

Date: 26th - 28th August, 2011 (Friday to Sunday) Venue: MRC Miri Chapter HQ
Theme: "Even Wars Have Laws"
Participation fees: RM 30 (T -shirt included)

Learn more about this camp by approaching our VAD Office located next to GK Mini Market.

Why should we join this camp?

EHL camp is packed with activities that allows youths (which is us) to learn the basic concepts of International Humanitarian Law (IHL) which is practiced by countries all over the world in order to keep our nation in peace and harmony.

This camp will let us express our creativity as well as increasing and polishing our experience and knowledge regarding the law that protects us as a human.

This camp will be a whole new enriching experience to disseminate IHL through exploration with the participants.

What will we do in this camp?
There are lots of programs for the participants of this camp whereby some of it includes:

Brainstorming,
Group discussion
Expressing opinions based on stories and dilemmas,
Role playing (acting on the related scene to learn about the situation better ),
Video and photos presentation
Writing, reflecting and interviewing

HURRY UP! There is limited space available as only 30 members are allowed to join the EHL Camp!

A Visit to the Sunflower Center

First Aider In Every Home updates!

Good day members of VAD 57!

As we all know, recently our organization has conducted an event which is known as First Aider in Every Home (FAIEH) on the 19th of March. Well, here's some pictures that was taken on that day and we hope for those that joined FAIEH, keep supporting our events! For those that missed out on this event, no worries! =) We have tons of events awaits!

What's up guys and girls? As we all know, our VAD 57 welcoming party which was held on 5th March, 2011 was a blast! The event was a success as members sign up and participate in the welcoming party to experience the true greetings of welcome from VAD 57.

The event was packed fill with games, prize giving ceremony, get-to-know session with VAD 57 and also not to forget all the delicious foooooooods served on that day!

Good day to all of our members! There will be an event going on this coming Saturday (19th March 2011) which is known as "First Aider In Every Home (FAIEH)" and its gonna be packed with activities such as talk, hands-on experience on handling emergency situations and so on. Curtin Open Day Updates + Past Activities

Hello and greetings dear blog readers,

I hope we can still rake in some decent readership responses. Hello all, and how has your week been? You might have heard of our unit, MRC VAD 57 has been teeming with activities lately. It is all in conjunction with the FAS (First Aid and Safety) Month 2010. Hence, indeed, we have had few things going on, but if in case you have missed any, fear not, we still have a few activities up before the semester ends.

Let's view through the check list of what has happened.

Our Curtin Open Day Booth Sale was a huge success. It turned out better than expected and we sold everyhing! Hope all you readers bought something and contributed to our funds ;) Joking. On that day, we sold:

Lychee Shake (it's lychee in the form of milkshake)
Plum juice
Lychee with lime
Homemade cornflake cookies
Gulingao (neh the black black one)
...and of course, our kick ass Curry Fish/Chicken ball (damn kick ass wei, no joke)

There's always more next year. Do not worry, I think our signature, curry fish and meatballs is slowly becoming a Red Crescent must sell item every Open Day. It's going to be a tradition :)

Introducing the FAS Month. Read on to find out what's FAS

Hey there fellow readers,

Our highly anticipated event of the semester is finally going to start. All the committee members have almost work their buttocks off to make this event memorable, worth your time and definitely to impress both new and old members alike.

FAS means First Aid and Safety. And we are allocating a month in year just to teach and spread
first aid knowledge, making good sure that the public and students (means you!) knows how to respond in a case of an emergancy, no need to worry, it involves only simple procedures!
Our theme for the upcoming FAS Month is S.A.F.E. which is an acronym for the words Safety Awareness For Everyone. It might sound cliche but it resonates with the direction of our event.

So, we have provided activities for all the participants throughout the whole month. Yes, it is a one month long event. Below you can find a table that enlists all the activities throughout the whole FAS month. Click to enlarge.

Semester 2 2010 Updates

Hi everyone,

I hope you have a great time enjoying your holidays or catching up with your well deserved sleep! First and foremost, i would like to welcome the new batch of students, foundation or degree to Curtin University Miri . May you have a fun time here making new friends and memories.

With that aside i would like to bring you to the attention of four important matters this semester.

1. Registration Booth

For those interested to join VAD-57 , there would be a booth at the cafeteria to register from this week till end of next week(6th August 2010).

If the booth is unavailable, feel free to check out the Red Crescent VAD-57 office next to the GK mini supermarket. Feel free to find out more of our activities from our friendly commitee and volunteers.

2. General Meeting

Call all members , old and new, or even aspiring ones to come next week , Saturday, 7th August 2010 for the General Meeting .

Time and Venue will be announced soon. But just mark your calendars!

3. FAS month

First Aid Safety(FAS) month is coming your way this September. We have activities line up for whole of Curtin and we need volunteers and participants. Do check out this event and help us out! It's a huge event!

4. Basic First Aid Course

The knowledge of First Aid is very important especially for critical moments. If you're interested to learn and be tested on First Aid, here are the details.

Date: 28 August 2010, Saturday (Course)

29 August 2010, Sunday (Exam)

Time: 8.00am-6.00pm

Venue: Malaysians Red Crescent Miri Chapter – Training Room

Instructor: Mr. Vincent Sim

For this course , a deposit of RM 10 is needed to ensure that all participants fully attend it. Absentees on either day or both would not be refunded at all cost. The course is free but the deposit is required so that full attendance is achievable.

- You will also need 2 passport sized photos

- Fill up a registration form either from the booth or the office

-Whether transportation is needed to the MRC Miri Training Room

What has been going on with MRC?

Hello there members and readers. First and foremost, sorry for the lack of updates. Assignments, mid term examinations and sleepless nights seem to be catching up on each and every one of us. Everyone is running around mad but nevertheless, we still manage to find time to have fellowship with each other in our VAD office. Keep up the good spirit guys!

Anyways, we have just completed our this year's very nautical-themed VAD and Youth Camp, last last weekend. The theme this year is : Lead the S.H.I.P.. Pretty catchy huh? It was a blast and a success. Participants have had fun with the activities organised for them, and this year they were quite sporting. The committees also have had as much fun, although all of us lack sleep. There are the dreaded mornings of the camp where we hated getting up early, but we did. Everyone was dead tired after the camp. For me, I hit the pillows once I reached home and slept till the next morning.

Special Mention: Kudos to MARCO for not sleeping at all for the two whole nights! I do not know how he manages to do that, but he did! He was our alarm clock and our security guard for the two nights.

Special thanks to all the committees, fascilitators and helpers for their hard work before, after and during the camp. Without you all, this camp will definitely be a flop.

Venue : MRC Miri Chapter, Lot 312, Lorong 1, Jalan Bulan Sabit, Miri, Sarawak
Theme: Lead the S.H.I.P (Strength, Humanity, Independence & Passion)
Participants:Curtin Students, VAD units and Youth

The goals of VAD & Youth Camp 2010 are to train participants to be independent and able to work as a team to face any obstacles in their future. Through the camp we hope to help the participants to enhance their first aid knowledge, leadership and problem solving skills. In addition to that, this camp will stress the 7 Principles of Red Cross & Red Crescent and complement training program organised by Malaysian Red Crescent Miri Chapter Training Sub-committee.

As your information, we are Red Crescent, but we mostly call ourselves as VAD-57.

"why we are Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD)”.

Individuals who join the Malaysian Red Crescent are grouped into three movement; Link, Youth and the Voluntary Aid Detachment. Links and Youth movement are for primary and secondary school members. While the Voluntary Aid Detachment is for students in tertiary institution just like us. The activities of VAD is more mature such public duties & organising events.

In summary, if an above 18 year old individual joins the Malaysian Red Crescent, he/she will be placed in a Voluntary Aid Detachment. "57" means we are in group no.57 amount the VADs in Malaysia.

Best Commandant Award 2009

Dear all,

Congratulation to our former commandant, Mr Johnny Ting for being awarded as Best Commandant Award Sarawak State once again this year!

For your information, Mr. Johnny Ting had been actively served Malaysian Red Crescent since year 2006. He is the 1st commandant of VAD-57 . Under his leadership, VAD-57 had obtained the Best VAD Award for 2 times, and obtained champion in First Aid Competition last year.

Throughout these years, he had involved and organised a lot of activities not only in VAD-57, but as well as Malaysian Red Crescent Miri Chapter, Sarawak State Headquarter, National Headquarter and even international red cross and red crescent events. That's why he deserve to get the award as Best Commandant Award Sarawak State for 2 times!

Due to his active participation, he is currently holding position as Assistant Officer-in-charge of VAD in Malaysian Red Crescent Miri Chapter, who is 1 of the youngest Chapter Committee. On behalf of my committee, I wish Mr. Johnny Ting best of luck and keep up the good work. Thank you very much!

The Mock Exercise went on smoothly, tho there was a strong wind and it rained. Do you know what should you do if you heard fire alarm keep ringing in campus or public places?

For you information, VAD -57 are organizing "Mock Exercise"in Curtin together with Curtin's security guard, fire department (Bomba) and police department.

Mock Exercise is one of the disaster preparedness designed to expose and test the adults and students on the following:-

Planning & organization skills
Leadership role, delegation, and division of the relief works
Management of crisis
Optimum utilization of the resources
Mobilization of the disaster response team and execute response plan
Team work among the member

Basic First Aid Course

The details of Basic First Aid Course are shown below:

Date : 28-29 August 2009 [Friday and Saturday] (Course)

30 August 2009 [Sunday] (Exam)

Time : 8am-4pm

Venue : Curtin University of Technology Sarawak Campus

For your information, Basic First Aid Course is the first aid course that all engineering students are compulsory to take. For non-chapter members, you need to pay RM 250 to join this course.

However, as long as you had registered as chapter members by fill up the carbon forms, 2 passport size photos and RM 10, you can join this course for free! And you are officially chapter members for 5 years.

Health Screening

They are not kids playing around with a gun. They actually on their duty to get students and staffs' body temperature checking regarding to the current Influenza A H1N1 case. The device(look like gun) actually is non-contact body temperature sensor. The benefits of the device are fast, no contact and no pain at all. So don't worry.

There will be a health screening once a week to ensure everyone is healthy. Hope everyone can corporate. We also looking for volunteers to help out. Thank you.

H1N1 Checking

Once again, H1N1 in Miri has getting worst and Curtin University had take this issue as urgent. Therefore, on this Wednesday, Thursday and Friday (5 August - 7 August) in the early morning, temperature checking will be carried on at LT Foyer.

For your own protection and friends, come to LT Foyer and do checking. Don't worry it won't take very much time if you are fine, just as Touch n Go. We just need to scan your body temperature.

Hopefully in 2 weeks time, we had declared negative result for Influenza A H1N1. It is recommended to protect yourself by wearing mask!

This is base on NST paper - The number of deaths from influenza A (H1N1) in the country hits 12. The latest case involves a 6-year-old boy who died at the Batu Pahat Hospital today at 2.30am.

Therefore, what can I tell you is H1N1 become severe already and worst, even in Miri. What should we do is keep on update on this issue and motivate yourselves base on the precaution.

"why we are Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD)”.

Individuals who join the Malaysian Red Crescent are grouped into three movement; Link, Youth and the Voluntary Aid Detachment. Links and Youth movement are for primary and secondary school members. While the Voluntary Aid Detachment is for students in tertiary institution just like us. The activities of VAD is more mature such public duties & organising events.

In summary, if an above 18 year old individual joins the Malaysian Red Crescent, he/she will be placed in a Voluntary Aid Detachment. "57" means we are in group no.57 amount the VADs in Malaysia.

Appreciation Dinner

On 31th of May 2009, There was a VAD camp appreciation dinner to all camp committee at 鱼虾蟹餐厅（Yi-Hah-Hai Seafood Restaurant).

It seen to be everyone had enjoyed that day. A lot of Seafood had been served and Taste Nice!! Thanks for coming and also helping on previous VAD Camp 2009. The camp is definitely a fantasy and memorable. Good job everyone.

15 May 2009 - Today and after a test, Malaysia has reported its first influenza A(H1N1) case involving a student who returned from the United States two days ago(cited from TheStar Online). Therefore, Malaysia is now on high alert, we must to be careful already. We all must work together to prevent the spread of the disease around the world.

Preventions

If you fell unwell, it is advised immediately seek for treatment.
High alert on the food you eat. Eat more vegetables.
Ensure Personal hygiene.
Drink plenty of water.
Make sure has enough sleep and rest.

1. Due to overwhelming response from Miri Chapter, National VAD Camp 2009 are NOW VAD CAMP 2009. This is to emphasize only for our chapter members. Local participants has exceed beyond expectations!

2. Registration is now closed. End up with:

160 Members (Max), 45 Committee Member (Max), 125 members confirmed with forms and payment, 29 members confirmed coming soon (outstation) and 8 members is on deduction list.

3. Pens, punnets and t-shirts will be collected on Friday (latest). Banner will be made only with Datuk Patinggi's name etched on it. Backdrop is still required.

4. Four Monkey tents are now in placed. Skirting and canvas will be deployed today. Members and committees are advised to bring mosquito repellent for your personal aid.

5. Barbecue OC is advised to prepare the event beforehand ASAP.

6. For those committees who cannot enter the camp tonight, please inform Camp Commandant via message/by call.

7. Apologize for Amendments of the Date of Meeting

Dear Members,

Regarding to the meeting of 10th April ( Friday) , only Board of Committees of VAD-57 are required to attend for the meeting session.

Since this is the tuition free weeks for Degree students, most of VAD-57's members went back to their hometown and having their holidays. Thus, it is not convenient for all members to attend to the meeting by this Friday and yet, we need to postpone the session.

I would like to apologize for amendments of the date of meeting. We going to postpone the meeting. In fact, during the upcoming meeting session,members will be brief on the future events of VAD-57 such as:

Italians know what it means to suffer from impacts of climate change. The human cost of the 2003 heatwave was higher in Italy than in any other EU country. According to government figures, 20,000 people died. Almost 2,000 forest fires were reported during that summer, and drought-related agricultural damage cost around €5 billion. In 2005 the country has experienced another heatwave, as well as severe droughts. Temperatures have nudged 40ºC in parts of the country, with the Government warning that around one million people are at serious health risk. Italy has generally become drier, with the number of rainy days falling by about 14 per cent since 1996. But the drop in the number of rainy days was accompanied by a rise in intensity of rainfall, meaning more heavy rainstorms. It is predicted that Italy will be one of the EU countries worst affected by future global warming, with overall rainfall levels shrinking still further, and many more prolonged and intense heatwaves.It seems that the Mediterranean Sea is also heating up rapidly: a recent study found that sea temperatures around Italy rose by almost 4ºC between 1985 and 2003. The instructor for the training is Mr. Vincent Sim. He has a lot of experiences in term of first aid. This course is FREE for members who had submitted the Chapter membership registration form, which cost RM 10, and attached with 2 passport size pictures. Returning bus from MRC Miri HQ is also provided at 5.00pm

Clothes Sorting

Dear all members,

The details for the event mentioned above are shown below:

For your information, clothes sorting is a community service which is for disaster management purpose. The reason is MRC Miri Chapter always help out in disaster matters in miri, such as flood, landslide, etc. by donate relief items, provide shelter and foods for victims, etc. Therefore, before we donate clothes to disaster victims, we need to sort out the clothes in different categories, such as man clothes and women clothes, and children clothes, and other categories. Besides that, we need to ensure that the clothes are usable and is clean.

Orientation Week Recruitment 2009

Dear Board of Committee,

In the new year of 2009, Malaysian Red Crescent Voluntary Aid Detachment-57 , in short VAD-57 will be recruited more new members through open booth. It is my honour to inform that I will be the Organizing Chairperson for this Orientation Week Recruitment Event.

Thus, I would like to request for helpers ( at least 15) from 16th February to 5 March 2009 in conjunction of Orientation Week 2009 of Curtin University. Our club will display some items such as slides show and First Aid Kit at our booth. Below are the details of the event:

First Aid Duty and Emergency Respond Allowance from MRC Miri Chapter

Criteria:

• Must have pass First Aid Exam either Basic First Aid or Mass Exam
• Must have proper attire, MRC T-shirt or uniform.
• Must inform or report to officer when duty

1. Below is the payment of allowance for first aid duty:

min of 2 hours to max of 4 hours will get RM5 and 2 point
min of 6 hours to max of 8 hours will get RM8 and 4 point
more than 8 hours will get rm12 and 6 point

Point will be recorded for award and certificate.

2. Allowance for Emergency respond will be RM12 each time.

• Report
• Monthly Report

This purpose is to promote our VAD in Curtin and society.
Below is some notices for VAD-57 members:

1. All the organizing committee or helper should have their own record for each activity they involved, organized and participated. This is to record for the Brach Award and National Award.

2. Every committee are required to submit your own report for year 2008 which consist of Activities organized, Activities participated, First Aid Duty Record, and Captions. Submit to Secretary before 15 of February 2008. This should be done every year.
